Comparison of Potential Environmental Impacts and Waste-to-Energy Efficiency for Kitchen Waste Treatment Scenarios in Central Taiwan

Taiwan has a sound solid waste recycling system, and waste-to-energy is attractive under the encouragement policy economic feasibility, especially in central southern regions with vast agricultural wastes. The four scenarios evaluated this study relating to current use or consideration for kitchen treatment strategy were incineration, landfill, composting, anaerobic digestion. These compared through life cycle assessment obtain most preferable solution. analysis was based on functional unit, i.e., 1 metric ton of treated, considered all impact categories CML_IA baseline 2000 method. It shown that energy recovery had enormous effects digestion having highest environmental performance change. A comparison between actual electricity consumption estimated generation by indicates decentralized suitable could be as solution short-term context. This provides an experience selecting proper method negligible impact.
